Ground Zero

The subfloor is the thick flat surface on which all other layers rest and is the bottom-most layer and it rests on the joists. If you have a concrete slab floor, the slab may be considered the subfloor. The subfloor is typically made of plywood or OSB and ranging in thickness from 19/32" to 1 1/8" thick, the subfloor is truly structural, second only to joists in this respect. Your subfloor holds up all of the above layers of flooring, as well as everything in your house—people, dogs, cats, pianos, and furniture, making it an important foundation for both commercial and residential flooring.
Uneven subfloors generally will fall into one of two broad categories: general sloping that affects the perimeter as a whole and irregularities within the floor perimeter. If the perimeter as a whole, slopes to the side or middle, the repair project will usually be a major one requiring the assistance of a contractor. If all four sides of the room's perimeter and center of the room are level, then the problem lies within the perimeter and often can be cured with the addition of underlayment or by applying a quality leveling compound.
